Background

The City of Toronto has spent around $20m retrofitting 89 buildings, and according to newspaper The Globe and Mail no one knows if the program produced “any real savings”. Particularly criticised in the audit of the program were the Building Automation Systems (BAS) installed in the arenas (particularly ice...

Introducing ‘Energy Doctor Check-ups’ - a new solution for small and medium sized businesses in Melbourne who are struggling with rising electricity costs.

Many energy ‘solution’ providers simply shop around for the best rates on your behalf. Aside from earning a healthy commission - which no doubt is passed onto the consumer -  this services requires long  contracts with suppliers, putting your business at the mercy of increasing energy costs (which...

I've been having some conversations with a large cleaning company who is encountering resistance from purchasing decision makers in stopping the collection of rubbish and recycling from bins under individual desks.  The advantages as I see it are that the client company will save on cleaning costs and also get better segregation of waste and different recycling streams. The cost saving alone doesn't appear to be tipping the scales.  Does anyone have a positive experience they can...

EPA's Carbon Management Principles Review:

The Carbon Management Principles (CMPs), developed by EPA Victoria in 2007, have informed the carbon management approach of many businesses across Australia. This has allowed the CMPs to be tested within a broad range of operations and, as a result, EPA has recieved feedback on how to improve them to ensure they remain useful, relevant and applicable. In addition, the Australian climate policy context has substantially changed since 2007...

Pressure Reducing Valves (PRV) are present in almost all steam systems, replacing a PRV with a Micro Steam Turbine is an efficiency opportunity that not much people know about, I find it a fascinating opportunity that could really create a step change on our emissions. Have anyone seen it working or heard about it?

Thank you to everyone who joined us to talk about 'Communicating Carbon to Customers' on 5 November.  In the Planet Ark presentation Sean O'Malley was going to play a short video showing how the carbon footprint of a bag of Walkers chips was measured.  This is from the ABC Landline 'Food To Go' program:

I’m looking for information relating to GHG emissions measurement and reduction strategies at a local government level. Not the LGA itself but across the whole community (households, industry, recreation, transport, construction, facilities etc).

Specifically:

Case studies: what’s worked, what hasn’t, barriers etc.

Emissions inventories for whole communities: activities > emissions sources > quantification strategies/sources

Cost abatement...

Hey Guys I was just wishing to start up a discussion on the advantages/disadvantages of geothermal and wind power generation as opposed to solar power generation. While solar power is obviously the renewable energy of choice for most people, and is fantastic for domestic hot water purposes, on the face of it solar power is somewhat inefficient when compared to other sources such as geothermal and and wind. With the Victorian government recently committing to cut greenhouse emissions by 20%...

A recent discussion on the ABC Radio Bush Telegraph program considered whether a carbon label on products would be welcomed by consumers or lead to confusion due to the suggestion that there is already a proliferation of eco labels (recyclable, organic, energy star, compostable....etc).

Do you think there is a place for product carbon labels in Australia or is this one label too many?

Anthony

With businesses and consumers being increasingly encouraged to measure, the number of data sources has increased significantly. The roll out of smart metering, submetering & virtual metering, expanded utilisation of Building Management Systems, ERP/SAP systems or raw utility bills can rapidly transform your energy/carbon management function into a data management problem.

Im interested to learn how the various software providers tackle the data management issue and how their...

In my discussions with businesses, I find one of the main reasons for low adoption rates of video or web conferencing [to reduce business travel] is the concern of not knowing how to use the equipment, or worse still, having the equipment not work when you need to use it. Here is a recent recent story of how I made use of web conferencing simply because I had to! http://exchange.telstra....

Report developed together with students from the Melbourne Business School who interviewed the Environmental managers of 50 of the largest energy consumers in Victoria. I want to share the results of this research with all of you.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time; society will need to re-think the way we live and the products we buy. This movement will require a significant shift in our use of natural resources and the technologies we draw upon.

We are already seeing this shift through a handful of creative entrepreneurs who realise the business opportunity of a sustainability society. Examples of some of these entrepreneurs are featured in Issue 9 of...
